Funding Innovative Research and Partnerships to Reduce Bycatch -
 NOAA Fisheries' Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program funds collaborative research and the development of innovative approaches that reduce bycatch of non-targeted species in fishing operations. Find out how the 14 projects funded in 2012 are addressing the top bycatch challenges facing U.S. fisheries today.

Agencies Propose to Simplify Critical Habitat Proposal Review Process under Endangered Species Act - Regulation changes would require the draft economic analysis of the proposed critical habitat designation to be available for public comment concurrent with the publication of the proposed critical habitat designation. Comment on these proposed changes through Oct. 23.

NOAA Finds Petition to List Five Species of Sturgeon under the Endangered Species Act May Be Warranted - We are seeking scientific and commercial information regarding these species (Acipenser sturio, A. naccarii, A. mikadoi, A. sinensis, and Huso dauricus) for a status review to determine if action is necessary.Submit information by Oct. 26.

NOAA Proposes to Re-Open Part of Georges Bank to Harvest of Atlantic Surfclams and Ocean Quahogs - The area has been closed since 1990 due to toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning. The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council requested the partial re-opening based on recent adoption of a testing protocol into the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. Comment on the proposed re-opening through Oct. 1.

New Survey of Ocean Floor Finds Juvenile Scallops are Abundant in Mid-Atlantic - NOAA researchers are getting a comprehensive view of the ocean floor using a new sea scallop survey instrument. Learn how the "Seahorse" confirmed high numbers of young sea scallops off of Delaware Bay and what this means for future harvests.

NOAA Seeks Comments on Environmental Impact Statement for Steller Sea Lion Protection Measures in Groundfish Fisheries in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands - NOAA will hold a public scoping meeting on Oct. 2 and accept written comments through Oct. 15 to determine issues of concern, the appropriate range of management alternatives, and the impacts of the proposed measures. Find out more

Bering Sea Skates Are Key to Alaska's Ecosystem - NOAA scientists have proposed six areas in the eastern Bering Sea as habitat areas of particular concern for skates because they function as skate nurseries. Learn how protecting these areas would not only benefit's Alaska's marine ecosystem but the economy as well.

Pacific Islands Region Hosts Summit for Recreational Fishermen - On August 21-23, NOAA Fisheries met with Pacific Islands fishermen to identify projects for possible implementation in 2013. Sharing regional and island specific issues, the fishermen generated 21 project ideas which will be integrated into a blueprint of actions to be implemented in 2013 or sooner.
